ACTIV was founded by Professor Harry McConnell with a heartfelt commitment to improving the lives of Australian Veterans and their families. Our team have strong ties to the ADF and are driven by a deep understanding of the unique challenges faced by those who have served. ACTIV provides holistic, Veteran-focused services that promote health, healing, and hope.
At the core of our mission is the delivery of accessible health and wellbeing programs tailored to support Veterans living with psychiatric injuries, alongside a strong emphasis on community connection through meaningful programs and events. We also offer trusted, independent DVA claim assessments—ensuring Veterans receive the benefits and support they deserve with dignity and confidence.
Professor Harry McConnell is a dedicated Consultant Neuropsychiatrist with a deep passion for supporting the health and wellbeing of Veterans and their families. With extensive training in Neurology, Psychology, Psychiatry, and Disability Medicine, he brings a uniquely holistic perspective to trauma care. Over the past 30 years, he has worked with Veterans from conflicts including WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan—across the USA, UK, New Zealand, and now Australia, where he has supported the local Veteran community for the past two decades.
Professor McConnell is widely regarded as an expert in the effects of trauma on the brain and mind, particularly in relation to PTSD and traumatic brain injury. His clinical work is grounded in compassion, respect, and a strong belief that every Veteran deserves access to high-quality, evidence-based care that truly meets their needs.
At ACTIV, Professor McConnell leads by example, ensuring that all doctors and staff involved in the organisation share ACTIV's core vision: to provide compassionate, expert, and Veteran-focused care. He is proud to lead a team that is united in its mission to empower Veterans and their families through health, education, and holistic wellbeing.
In addition to his clinical work, Professor McConnell has made major contributions to global mental health and neuropsychiatry. He has served as an advisor to national health authorities, contributed to international clinical guidelines—including BMJ Clinical Evidence and The Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines—and played key roles in organisations such as the TGA, AHPRA, NHMRC, and the World Health Organisation. He currently chairs the Queensland RANZCP Neuropsychiatry Committee and has been a longstanding member of the Binational Neuropsychiatry Committee.
